What is a Natal Chart?

Natal Chart is a snapshot of the sky at the moment you were born, that maps out why you needed to come in at the moment you did and what you are trying to accomplish by the time you are complete. It is a map that shows your natural talents, emotional underpinnings and how to live more “Dharmic” (aligned with your intentions) over creating stress and karma (impaired judgments that you hopefully learn from–if you’re lucky). Transits are the things that happen along life’s way, where the movements of the planets in our heavens are activating your original Natal plans. Learning to navigate your transits (and help spouses, kids, loved-ones or clients do the same) is a life-changing and insightful gift!W

What are Aspects?

Aspects are geometric mathematical calculations of the planets in relationship to each other and to the 12 inter-stellar constellations, or Signs (like “Aries, Taurus, Sagittarius” etc.), and the degrees within the houses governed by those signs. Learning your Natal placements can feel miraculous, because you feel a little more “known by the Heavens”, they are so right on with what you already know to be true in your life. Aspects tell you HOW you manage the way these energies manifest and how YOU can use your agency to navigate a more well-adjusted and abundant life. What is a Solar Return?

Solar Returns are a snapshot of the planetary placements in the sky at the exact moment that the Sun returns to the exact position it was in the sky on the day you were born. Because there are 360° in a circle and 365-days in a year, your Solar Return occurs either the day of, before, or after your actual calendar birthday. It gives you a map of your upcoming year, just like a weekly weather report does for your week. Let’s begin with a quote from Patrick Curry Ph.D.

“This is a (study) for people who look to astrology — as Junge noted of the I Ching —neither for facts or power, but wisdom.”

When I say astrology, what comes to most people’s minds is new age, nonsensical, emotional, and intellectual immaturity, and this may be the case in much of pop-culture astrology.

What comes to mind, for me, when you say astrology is birthdays, holy days, Equinoxes that bring Spring and Fall, and Solstices that bring Summer and Winter. Ancient scrolls written by the Old Testament Prophet, Abraham, staying true to each of life’s cycles, the wisdom to not push when nothing is working, to anticipate and harness opportunity, and knowing layers of the self I would not otherwise have the capacity to see. Also, astrophysics, the nature of time and eternity, beautiful moons, chakra alignment, bare feet in the grass, cozy scarfs by warm fires, windows for accelerated growth, and awareness around eclipses. Mother nature’s three 21-day cycles each year to let go of dysfunctional habits and form healthier ones (during Mercury Retrograde).

When someone asks me that same old question: “You don’t believe in astrology, do you? I mean, you don’t really think the planets make you do stuff, do you?”

My answer is always the same: “Absolutely not…Unless you get up when the sun comes up and sleep when it goes down? Unless you can your peaches when they fall from the trees at Summer’s end? Celebrate your birthday, or Easter (always the first Sunday, after the first full moon, following the Equinox).

Saying I don’t believe in astrology, would also be saying I don’t believe in archetypes and how they affect us–the self, the mother, the hero within, the follower, the leader, the prophet, the sage. Or denying the seasons’ beginning, middle, and end.

In truth, astrology (interpreted well and with experience) is incredibly grounding for living more functionally in the rock-solid world, while staying open and spiritually connected.

I realize not everyone has the chance to benefit from it, either because of discounting/dismissing, or being too voraciously shallow in its study to glean anything but a set of keywords, stereotypes, and labels. This type of YouTubing, pseudo-training, pop-culture astrology offers interest that is a mile wide, yet only inches deep. Reaffirming a hyper-vigilance that brought folks to it in the first place and an endless line of distraction from actually doing the real work to live more functionally in both reality and possibility.

Studying astrology is not for the faint of heart, because seeing more brings with it more accountability.

Beginners use astrology to validate their biases, while experienced practitioners know full well that it should challenge everything we take for granted and open us up to seeing things we may not be ready to see.

It is one of the most life-affirming practices that I have discovered in my over 30-year journey.

So this morning, as the sun has crossed into 00°00′ Virgo, I finished the 15 pages on this Constellation Sign for the Manual and shared this excerpt from it with my private Soul Weather PRO™ Group:

With nature (the manifestation of Virgo), where you show up for it, it will show up for you. This includes the nature that surrounds us and the human nature we carry within us.

Where Virgo lands on our chart, we find our capacity to increase our appreciation of the mundane when we learn that the very best fruit of our labors comes from holding a healthy understanding and respect for timing. Virgo teaches us about our nature, how to honor it, and how to live well within its cycles. Mature Virgo yields the best bounty. We could call this dharmic, or North Node Virgo. The word we use for the highest yield and the finest fruit is “RIPE”.

Virgo teaches us about our humanity and what it means to be a good human. Nature offers a sense of ethics and humility that is found nowhere else on the chart, like dharmic Virgo. It is understanding how and where we work honestly, how we till the sacred ground of our bodies and health. How we use that health to be helpful to others, and how we choose to harvest our intentions will come full circle when we recognize the timing of life’s work in the contractions of “right or wrong” versus the ability to be patient in our fully RIPENING Self.

Virgo shows us what the best, abundant harvests feel like. It instructs us on how to live well in mortal time as we return to routine life at summer’s end, and how we choose to tend to those who cannot yet care for themselves.

So whether we are learning to tie our shoes and make our bed every morning or finding our classroom on the first day of school, we use the street smarts that Virgo energy helps us develop to hone our competence and skill at being human.

Virgo teaches us what creating our own physical safety and well-being looks like and how to recognize the signs of premature rot and attend to them, as well as grow our capacity to meet each moment with sowing and harvest that says to us again and again: “Well done thou good and faithful servant of this daily physical-place soil. Here are some sweet fruits and savory herbs. Open your arms and let me fill them.”

This is why we begin with the Bodhi Yoga Teacher Training because in order to study the highest octaves of the heavens, we must first find the humility in our humanity, breath, bone, and gesture. This way we use astrology to not only inspire the essential layers of the soul but can also live as functional humans in an unfathomably beautiful world.
